Why child needs supplement at growing age?

by My Health Pharma 23 Jun 2023

During the growing age, children have increased nutritional needs to support their rapid growth and development. While a balanced diet should ideally provide most of the necessary nutrients, there are certain situations where supplements may be recommended or beneficial. Here are a few reasons why a child might need supplements during the growing age:

Nutrient Deficiencies:

If a child has a specific nutrient deficiency, such as iron, vitamin D, calcium, or vitamin B12, their pediatrician may recommend supplements to address the deficiency. These deficiencies can affect growth, bone health, cognitive development, and overall well-being. However, it's important to note that supplements should be taken under the guidance of a healthcare professional who can assess the specific needs of the child and determine appropriate dosages.

Picky Eaters:

Some children may be selective eaters or have restricted diets due to allergies, intolerances, or cultural or religious beliefs. In such cases, it can be challenging to obtain all the necessary nutrients from food alone. Pediatricians may recommend supplements to fill the gaps and ensure the child is getting adequate nutrition for their growth and development.

Increased Nutrient Demands:

The growth spurt during puberty and adolescence often leads to increased nutrient demands. During this time, children may require higher amounts of certain nutrients, such as protein, calcium, and iron, to support bone growth, muscle development, and hormonal changes. In some cases, supplements may be suggested to complement the diet and meet these increased nutrient requirements.

Medical Conditions:

Certain medical conditions may interfere with nutrient absorption or utilization in the body. Children with conditions such as celiac disease, cystic fibrosis, or certain gastrointestinal disorders may have difficulty absorbing nutrients from food. In such cases, supplements may be prescribed to ensure proper nutrient intake and prevent deficiencies.

Vegetarian or Vegan Diets:

Children following vegetarian or vegan diets may require supplementation, particularly for nutrients that are predominantly found in animal-based foods, such as vitamin B12, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids. These nutrients are essential for growth, cognitive function, and overall health. Parents should work closely with healthcare professionals to ensure their child's nutritional needs are met through a well-planned vegetarian or vegan diet supplemented as needed.

It's important to emphasize that supplements should not replace a nutrient diet. They should be used according to the doctor’s prescription. He can understand a child's specific needs, recommend appropriate supplements, and monitor their effects.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
